A lively exploration of Horizontal Democracy and Affinity Groups
Starhawk catalyzed the discussion and activities..it was like a beehive buzzin’ during the breakout groups! Difficult issues that have challenged occupy were named, especially the need to have a leaderful movement that is expressed through power from within that inspires, not power over to dominate.

The First Occupy Forum Draws a Crowd
In talking about how we want our work lives to change, there were tensions between proponents of “self-help”, communalism, and the creation of alternative economies, and those who were more focused on confronting the powers that be, whether state or economic forces. A “both/and” strategy was the sentiment that was able to bridge this divide.
Chris Carlsson ended the discussion by talking about “Radical Patience.” We feel a tension between our desire for immediate change, and the time of history, which is slow and uncertain. So, we must do what we can now, and see it as a contribution towards an unknowable future.

The Story of the Forum May 13, 2012
One thing that we learned from participating in Occupy is that strangers can come together in conversation and alliance in a beautiful and powerful way. We also discovered how threatening that power is to the forces of exploitation and oppression. That is why we decided to have the Occupy Forum. Its purpose is to continue what started in all the occupations.
We would like the Forum to be a place where the ideas for new initiatives might form, and the people ready to create new groups might find each other. We would also like it to be be a place where all of us feel comfortable sharing ideas and hashing out differences. There is a lot left to do. Join us: Discuss, Learn, Commune, Act.
