Mr. Salah, one of the co-founders of the 6th of April Youth Movement. Salah talks about the various strategies that were learned, developed, and implemented by activists and civil society groups in the years leading up to the Jan 25 protests, which after 18 days of nonviolent mass action, led to the ouster of Egypt’s former President, Hosni Mubarak.

Camper Matt made this awesome banner using a recycle logo

and (with permission!) our graphic designer Ross made some rad banners using reknowned San Francisco artist Mona Caron’s amazing murals.

They are now part of the random rotation of banner images we use! Also a lot of people didn’t understand the Confucian symbol banner so that one has been taken down for now.

Website Software Update

Greetings from the website team! Software, like any system, requires regular maintenance. We have been having increasing problems with our install of WordPress (the software that manages all our content and users) which means: upgrade time! Two weeks ago we tried an update and something went horribly awry. Whoops! We do lots of backing up of the website’s data, though, so we rolled it back and tried to clean up the dust from the corners.

We just did the update again. It failed. Stay tuned. Please let us know at occupysfweb(at)gmail(dot)com if you find something weird or broken on the site! We are doing our best and can do even better with your help with Quality Assurance.

The internet is going dark today in a major protest against SOPA and PIPA. Occupiers have been using YouTube, SoundCloud, Tumblr and other social media as part of our protest. SOPA and PIPA can potentially block our ability to use social media to get our message out.

To find out how you can participate in this major action go to American Censorship.

NOTE: Planned technical/backend maintenance of web server between 1:15-1:30 on Thursday Jan 12. The web server will still be running, not an service outage.

The Web Team met in front of 101 Market Street on Wed Jan 11, 2011 at 6:30pm.

Redesign

- Jane wants to redesign the front page to have static content and to scrap the “About”, “Get Involved” pages.
- Rachel and Yas say “About” needed to educated people about Occupy, “Get Involved” is equally important.
- Susan wants more in-depth information, more content in “About” etc.
- No consensus on front page/menu redesign
- Jane provided content update for “Get Involved” page and will email occupysfweb with the welcoming committee link

Web Site Survey Announce

- Sarah P is heading user survey on the web site (audience analysis, user stories, expectations etc.. )
- Heather + Susan interested in participating, will contact Sarah
- Robb suggested using “Bright Ideas” as a platform

Educational content

- Feedback from various people that we don’t have enough educational content
- Maria and Rachel will go to GA tomorrow and call out for people to write richer, text based content and more educational content
- This activity is more centered around Media rather than Web team
-Uncertainty about how to write neutral content might be a reason why people are more comfortable shooting video rather than writing content

WordPress issues

- Maria says the server is slow, she has gotten 404s before, sometimes WordPress loses your content
- Prevent content loss by clicking “Save Draft” while you are writing posts.
- Need to schedule an update, don’t want to upgrade the server too close to J20
- User cache problems reported by Amy/Jane.. Web team working on this. Still open.
- Rachel suggested writing a script/cron to delete the cache
